Laid-back Brits ignore health risks and holiday without travel insurance
18/06/2009
Millions of Britons place their health at risk when taking overseas holidays, according to pharmacists who say that one in 9 don't take even the most basic medication with them. Those who also forget to take out travel insurance will find themselves seriously out of pocket if they subsequently have to seek medical treatment abroad.
Research by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) revealed that half of all Brits who have travelled to countries where tropical diseases are prevalent have suffered illness or infection, yet most don't take bare essentials such as insect repellent with them.
A recent poll by moneysupermarket.com revealed that 2 out of 3 don't bother to take out travel insurance either. If these holidaymakers were to succumb to an illness or suffer an accident overseas, their medical bills could make their bank balance as unhealthy as their bodies.
Hospitals in Europe can cost between £870 and £1,300 per day, according to one claims assistance company. Treatment for a broken limb can amount to several thousands of pounds.
Urging holidaymakers to visit their local pharmacy to stock up on essentials before leaving home, the RPSGB head of practice Heidi Wright said: ""Pharmacists are medicines experts and are ideally placed to help with your holiday health needs.
""It is important people visit their local pharmacy for a free consultation and to stock up on health essentials before embarking on their summer holidays.""
