Liverpool one of "most popular city in Europe"
23/01/2008
Liverpool is attracting a record number or tourists and is set to become one of Europe's top city break destinations.
Alpharooms.com, an online tour operator, says that the city has had more than double the bookings this year than it did last year, reports the travel Daily News website.
The northern city, which this year is the European Capital of Culture, was also the most searched for city on Google last week, says the news website.
Lee Goodwin, commercial analyst at Alpharooms.com, said: "We always expected to see an increase on bookings as Liverpool launched its European Capital of Culture year, but we never expected the sheer volume of last minute bookings we've had."
He added that the city has always been poplar but the new culture status has "boosted its profile".
Kris Donaldson, executive director for Liverpool's Capital of Culture company, told travel Daily News that it was the ideal opportunity to "showcase the city" to international tourists.
Of the 350 events the city is holding for its culture year 70 per cent will be free, including music and art events.
