Millions heading abroad this winter

26/09/2008

More than a million people are planning to embark on their first foreign holiday in several years this winter following poor weather this summer, new research has revealed.

A survey by Abbey Credit Cards discovered that more than 15 million people are considering a holiday abroad this winter.

Of those planning to head overseas, 1.1 million are choosing to take their first holiday abroad in three years, the firm noted.

Callum Gibson, head of Abbey Credit Cards, said: "Clearly many Britons are in need of escaping our gloomy weather and heading overseas. If you are heading abroad this winter then it's important to consider how you can make your money work harder."

Regardless of whether they are taking their first foreign trip in several years or they travel regularly, people may want to ensure they have adequate travel insurance.

Sally Leeman, media relations manager with Norwich Union recently warned that an injury or illness can "leave a traveller thousands of pounds out of pocket" if they do not have travel insurance.

The expert said it makes "very good sense" to take out cover before setting off on holiday.
