More than two million Britons will set off on holiday this weekend

More than two million Britons will head off on holiday this Easter weekend, hundreds of thousands of them heading to Spain and the Canary Islands. Tenerife, the star of the 3D movie Clash of the Titans being released on Friday, is the most popular holiday destination.

Egypt will also be a popular choice this weekend, in particular the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh, and thousands will be flocking to Tunisia and Turkey.

Further afield families are heading to Florida's theme parks and to the Dominican Republic, one of the most affordable of the Caribbean islands.

Winter sports enthusiasts desperate to squeeze in one last holiday before the ski resorts shut down have made Geneva the most popular gateway to the Alps. Recent heavy snow fall has fuelled further demand for flights to Alpine resorts in France, Italy and Switzerland.

Easter is traditionally a peak time for city breaks and all-time favourites Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Milan and New York will be packed with Brits this weekend.

Holidays in the UK are as popular as ever with London, Edinburgh and Manchester leading the way for city breaks and many heading off to the Channel Islands and cottages in Cornwall, East Anglia and the North of England, said ABTA.

Anyone taking a 'staycation' this Easter is reminded that travel insurance is essential for holidays of two nights or more to provide cover for such things as loss or damage to personal belongings.

John McEwan ABTA Chairman said "Easter is the traditional curtain raiser to the summer and I am delighted to see that hundreds of thousands of our customers are taking the opportunity to take a well earned break both here in the UK and overseas".
