New eco-tax to increase cost of holidaying in Balearics

31/03/2016

From 1 July this year visitors to the Balearic Islands, including Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza will be charged up to 2 euro per day eco-tax.

The tax is intended to help preserve the environment on the islands and all overnight stays in tourist accommodation will be subject to the tax.

The tax will be 1 euro per day for stays in one to 3 star hotels and 2 euro per day for stays in four and five star hotels.  Children under 16 will be exempt from the tax and there will also be a 50% discount during low season (November to April).

The eco-tax will be collected by hotels and accommodation providers in the Balearics.

The islands’ vice-president and tourism minister, Biel Barceló, said: “With the help of the tax revenue, we will be able to maintain and improve the quality of tourism on the Balearics.

"We are grateful that our visitors will help to protect and preserve this little paradise with this small contribution."
