New York still top of the shops at Christmas
16/10/2007
New York remains the most popular destination for Christmas shopping breaks, it has been claimed.
According to Sean Tipton of the Association of British Travel Agents, quite aside from the range of goods available, economic factors - such as a favourable exchange rate - has reinforced the Big Apple's status at the top of travellers' wish lists for Christmas travel.
He said: "Every year we see a surge in business, particularly in November, of people travelling to New York.
"It's more and more the case, especially this year because the pound has hit the magic two dollar barrier. New York also gets a lot of attention from the media encouraging people to go for that reason.
"Quite apart from the exchange rate being very healthy at the moment, America is considerably cheaper than the UK in terms of going shopping, particularly for electrical goods and clothes."
A recent poll conducted by travel search engine Kayak.co.uk found that 75 per cent of Britons are considering a foreign holiday over Christmas this year.
