Pet owners urged to consider their insurance options

26/08/2008

Pet owners with crying cats and drowsy dogs have been urged to consider their insurance options by one expert.

John Schlander writes for the St Petersburg Times that a sickly pet can be expensive, costing owners more than they had originally bargained for.

The expert notes that only 25 per cent of US pets are thought to be covered by pet insurance, despite the fact this type of policy can make owners significant savings when their furry friend requires expensive treatment.

However, he does concede that there is an alternative to pet insurance - putting money aside in a savings account with a high interest rate especially for animal care.

The problem with this, he asserts, is that for a pet with reoccurring illnesses the funds may not be enough.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Brits are insuring their pets' health more than their own.

Research conducted by Tesco found that 23 per cent of our four-legged friends were insured last year compared with 12.2 per cent of humans.
