Revival of travel agents offering the personal touch

11/02/2008

travel agents are set for a comeback after many large tour operators closed branches in favour of online bookings.

Figures from the Association of British travel Agents show that 1 400 agencies have closed in the past ten years as more people opt to book their trip away on the internet, reports the Guardian.

However, one travel agent owner has just opened a new shop and thinks that the high street branches are set for a comeback.

Phil Nuttall, managing director of the travel Village, said: "The big boys are closing shops at a rate of knots, which I think is leaving a massive gap in the market.

"New technology means that staff in an agency aren't just taking orders from brochures, they can put together tailor-made packages."

A Lancashire-based travel agent has gone one step further and has launched a consultation service where staff go to the client's house and find the right holiday for them, reports This is Lancashire.
