Rugby fans urged to check travel insurance

19/10/2007

The exodus of English rugby fans to the World Cup in Paris this weekend will spark a rise in travel insurance purchases, a leading travel insurance provider has claimed.

According to InsureandGo, last year's football World Cup saw travel insurance claims rise by 23 per cent - a phenomenon it says happens every time a team is competing in a major international tournament.

Perry Wilson managing director of InsureandGo said: "Thousands of England fans in Paris and many others on holiday abroad elsewhere will be following the game, and as the drink flows and people become excited, the chances of being injured or, for example, having their pockets picked increases."

Meanwhile, the likelihood that many England fans will be driving to the World Cup is also a cause for concern and once again highlights the importance of a good travel insurance policy, Laura Wood of NFU Mutual said.

"As people frantically book up the remaining Channel crossings in the hope of seeing their team lift the trophy for a second time, insurance is probably the last thing on their mind," she said.

"However, driving on unfamiliar foreign roads can be a tricky business. It is important that you check whether you are covered in the event of an accident or theft whilst you drive through France."
