Ryanair offers rescue flights to FlyGlobespan passengers

21/12/2009

Budget airline Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) is offering 'rescue fares' of £59 to £89, including taxes, to FlyGlobespan passengers who were left stranded by the Scottish airline's collapse last week.

The special one-way fares, which apply to flights to and from Edinburgh and Prestwick airports, are subject to availability, said Ryanair.

The flights can be booked at www.ryanair.com/member/globespanrescuefare until December 24 for travel until January 15.

Ryanair will fly passengers to and from Alicante, Faro, Gran Canaria, Malaga, Palma and Tenerife.

Passengers must quote their Globespan booking reference when they buy the new tickets and take the same reference for verification to the airport check-in point. Passengers who arrive to check-in without their Globespan booking reference will not be accepted for travel.

Next spring, Ryanair will launch new flights from Prestwick to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, replacing the service operated by FlyGlobespan from Glasgow. The budget airline will also fly to Fuerteventura from Bournemouth and Liverpool, as well as from several airports in continental Europe.

However, Ryanair has also announced that it will scale back its expansion plans after 2013 after negotiations with Boeing to buy up to 200 new aircraft stalled. A statement on the airline's website said it was bringing forward plans to 'significantly reduce growth'.

Could this be an end to cheap flights to Europe? Certainly not in the short term but maybe in the future we will be offered fewer flights to unpronounceable destinations where the main attractions seem to be cheap food and beer.
