Ryanair to axe air fares?

08/11/2007

Low cost carrier Ryanair is planning to scrap air fares altogether, it has been revealed.

Under plans outlined by the airline's chief executive officer Michael O'Leary, the firm will replace the income it would receive from fares with food and luggage charges, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

He said: "It's our ultimate ambition to get to a stage where the fare is free."

Mr O'Leary also announced that the firm's check in charge will be rising from £2 to £4.

The move is intended to encourage passengers to check in online and only travel with hand luggage, with those who comply being exempt from the regulations.

This it is hoped will enable Ryanair to reduce the number of check-in desks in operation, and thus result in cost savings.

Mr O' Leary said: "We are upfront about it - the check-in charge will rise.

"Until we get to 40 per cent doing it online over the next year or two - that [charge] will double."
