Sail away from the UK with discounted travel insurance

29/05/2009

Cost-conscious Brits are cutting the price of cruise holidays by choosing ones that sail direct from the UK and taking advantage of last minute deals, including cut-price travel insurance.

According to the Passenger Shipping Association, almost half of all cruises now depart from British ports, which means customers don't need to buy international flights to join a ship overseas.

The Mediterranean has always been Britain's favourite cruise destination but, perhaps due to the credit crunch, the Caribbean has been replaced by Northern and Western Europe as the second favourite.

Cruising has enjoyed a surge in popularity over the past decade, and it now accounts for one in every 12 package holidays booked in the UK.

While once a cruise was considered a 'holiday of a lifetime' which took years to plan, now many trips are booked within 3 months of departure.

Late bookers can save money on travel insurance by buying a last-minute policy from insurewithease, which is cheaper as it excludes cancellation cover.

More cruises will be available from British ports in the next few years with the arrival of 30 or more ships by 2012, including Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth next year.
