Singapore Airlines grounds three A380s to replace engines

10/11/2010

Singapore Airlines has announced that Rolls-Royce has advised that they change the engines on three of their A380 planes to update them to a newer model. The move comes just days after a Qantas A380 was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its engines exploded.

The new engines that will be applied to the Singapore Airlines planes will be an updated version of the same model that they already use. A spokesperson for Singapore Airlines confirmed that the decision to replace the engines is a precautionary measure, as advised by Rolls-Royce.

The three Singapore Airlines planes that will be overhauled are based in London, Sydney and Melbourne, and travellers should expect minor disruptions to their journey. Singapore Airlines have not indicated how long the three planes will be grounded, but they have apologised for the disruption it may cause and they have asked air passengers to be understanding.

After the incident involving the exploded A380 engine, Qantas checked its fleet of planes for safety reasons. According to their findings they found slight anomalies within three A380 engines. An issue that was discovered in two of the engines was that there was oil inside them where there shouldn't have been, which shouldn't be the case in planes that are just two years old.

If you have a flight booked with Singapore Airlines, contact them before you leave for the airport to find out if your flight may have been delayed or cancelled due to the grounded planes.

The A380 is the world's largest passenger plane. Since its launch six years ago, it has experience numerous complications including technical problems, an engine failure on a Singapore Airlines flight from Paris, and two burst tyres after a plane landed in Sydney earlier this year.
