Single parents must feel they draw the short end of the straw every time they book a family holiday. Not only are the often excluded from free child places, but they also have to pay single room supplements with some package holiday companies. Here are some firms that offer a better deal on family holidays for single parents.

Small Families (www.smallfamilies.co.uk) still charges single parents the dreaded single room supplement, but they also offer the alternative of twin, triple or quad rooms for one parent families who want to cut their costs.

Travelling with this tour operator also guarantees you'll be with other single parents so you might find someone to socialise with in the evening when the kids have gone to bed.

It features many popular destinations in the Mediterranean plus family holiday to Egypt, the Caribbean and in Finland.

Single Parents on Holiday (www.singleparentsonholiday.co.uk) features selected hotels which are exclusively resort for single parent families. You can choose from Austria, Croatia, Greece and Spain and there are also ski holidays during February half term.

If you want to find friends of your own on holiday, consider Mango (www.mangokids.co.uk), which works hard at getting parents to mix. It organises trips to the Mediterranean and Morocco.

For an activity-based family holiday, try Acorn Adventures (www.famillies.acornadventure.co.uk). It offers a wide range of daredevil activities including abseiling, climbing and orienteering in its packages to France, Italy, England and Wales. All are included in the price of the holiday, as is instruction.

Unlike the other companies mentioned, Acorn was not set up specifically for single parent holidays, but the structure of its holidays often suits single mums and dads.
