Skiers save money with winter sports travel insurance

13/08/2009

Passengers travelling to winter resorts with British Airways will have to pay up to £60 to check-in skis and snowboards from October. However, they can save some of the extra cash they will have to spend on the flight by buying cheaper winter sports travel insurance online.

BA which recently ditched free refreshments on short-haul flights says its decision to introduce charges for the carriage of sports equipment from this winter is one of the steps designed to return the loss-making airline to profitability.

From October 7, skis and snowboards will be included in passengers' free baggage allowance but if they exceed the 23kgs permitted they will have to pay £30 per bag for each one way flight.

BA's charges for the carriage of sports equipment will be the same as Ryanair's but the low-cost carrier does not give customers any free baggage allowance. Ryanair passengers must pay £10 for the first checked in bag and £20 for the second and they are allowed a total maximum weight of just 15kgs.

Easyjet charges £18.50 for each way for sporting items for passengers who pre-pay and £26 per item for those who pay at the airport. In addition, passengers are allowed to check in bags weighing up to 20kgs, for which there are additional charges which vary according to the route.
