Solo travelers should "read up as much as possible"
26/03/2008
Solo travelers should "read up as much as possible" before setting off on their trips, one industry expert has advised this week.
According to responsibletravel.com, reading up on local customs and cultures, as well as learning some of the language, will help travelers feel equipped to deal with any sticky situations that may arise.
Kristina Pentland, communications manager for responsibletravel.com, said: "You should also book just a few places to stay at the start of your trip - this will give you a base and some time from which to get orientated.
"Always leave messages with other travelers or the place you are staying so people know where you are and... have fun!"
She added that travelers should remember that "traveling with respect earns you respect".
In related news, figures published by responsibletravel.com in March this year revealed that women are now "leading the way" in terms of green holidays.
Furthermore, 67 per cent of holidays in 2007 were booked by women and 37 per cent of women chose to travel alone.
