Spain to start charging for popular tourist destinations

05/09/2013

As some of Spain's most famous tourist attractions start charging for entry we're looking at whether Spain is still good value for money for British tourists.

We all know that the economic crisis of recent years has hit Spain hard, so it's not surprising that local authorities are trying to make the books balance by charging tourists for entry to popular attractions, such as Gaudi's Parc Guell in Barcelona and Valencia's annual Tomatina festival.

Tourism is one of the only industries that is working well in Spain at the moment, so councils are trying to make as much money from tourists as they can.

Against this backdrop, is Spain still a good value destination for your holiday?

According to the Post Office's annual Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, which was released in January, it is - Spain was ranked joint cheapest along with Sri Lanka out of 42 popular holiday destinations.

At just £36.14 for eight items, including an evening meal with drinks Spain's holiday cost totals were less than half those of 21 other destinations. In fact eating out in Spain is now 50% cheaper than it was 5 years ago.

So although you may have to start paying for entry to some attractions it seems that the relative cost of accommodation, food and drink should more than make up for it.

If you are planning a holiday in Spain, to make the most of the Spanish warmth as we head into the autumn at home, it is important to have travel insurance for your trip.

Travel insurance will protect you against the risk of incurring large medical bills if you require medical treatment whilst you are away.
