Star-gazers need worldwide travel insurance to see total eclipse
05/06/2009
OK, so buying a worldwide travel insurance policy won't guarantee you'll see the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st Century, but you'll need it if you're one of the thousands of Brits planning to travel to China next month for the best view of this once-in-a-lifetime phenomena.
Totality is expected to last more than 5 minutes at the Qiantang River in China which, according to one UK-based holiday company, will be the best spot for a sighting. So far, Wendy Wu Tours says it's signed up almost 1,000 people for the trip next month, and many more are planning to travel independently.
Totality will occur at 9.38am on July 22. At about 12.30pm, those on the banks of the Qiantang Ring will also witness the world famous Qiantang River Tidal Bore. The gravitational pull of the moon and sun will create a wave several metres high as the high tide penetrates the relatively narrow river mouth.
For more information, you can visit Wendy Wu's dedicated eclipse website, www.chinaeclipse.com. The company still has some places left on its tours, which start at £2,390 pp. Insurewithease offers travel insurance to China from less than £13 for 8 days comprehensive cover.
