Stranded tourists on holiday in Greece will be compensated

22/06/2010

Tourists on holiday in Greece have been handed a guarantee by the local tourist authority - accommodation fees will be paid for if visitors become stranded due to austerity measure strikes. Even those that are affected by volcanic ash airspace closures will be compensated.

The move comes at a time when fewer tourists are booking a holiday in Greece amid fears that their trip might be disrupted by public transport strikes. Usually, Greece relies on tourism to bring in 20% of the nations income. This figure is now down to around 10%.

With the promise of compensation, the Greek tourist industry hopes that the move will encourage more tourists to take a holiday in Greece this summer. If you fancy a holiday in Greece and you want to make sure strike action won't affect your trip, do a little research to find out when strikes are likely to take place.

Strikes will continue throughout Greece over the summer and so far, the following planned strikes have been announced:

  • 22-24 June: Strikes on Greek Railways at 07:00-09:00, 15:00-17:00 and 22:00-24:00
  • 23 June: General strike
  • 29 June: General strike
  • 29-30 June: 48 hour strike on Greek Railways
