Strikes could hit Christmas air travel

Holidaymakers could be facing more frustrating disruption at UK airports, after British Aviation Authority workers threatened strike action.

The dispute centres on plans to omit new recruits to the company from its final salary pension plan.

Brendan Gold, national secretary for civil air transport at Unite, said: "BAA has made a big contribution to the profits of its Spanish parent Ferrovial.

"Our members are saying spend some of that money here on pensions or face the consequences."

A ballot to determine whether industrial action will be pursued is set for December.

BAA owns seven UK airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton.

A spokesman for Southampton airport told the Southern Daily Echo: "We haven't had any formal notification from the unions. Until then there is very little we can say. But, we remain committed to working with the unions."
