Strikes in Spain will lead to flight cancellations tomorrow

28/09/2010

Yet more airline misery will be descending on British airports tomorrow (29 September 2010) when hundreds of flight cancellations will affect Brits travelling to Spain. Strikes in Spain will be taking place tomorrow as airline workers fight back against government austerity measures. Roughly 500 flight cancellations will cause travel chaos at UK airports.

Spanish law dictates that a minimum level of service must be provided during the strikes in Spain, which suggests that only one in five European flights will be operating.

Travellers that have their journeys affected by flight cancellations will be able to claim a full refund, or they can reschedule their flights for another day. There may be some restrictions on alternative flights though.

Budget airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair are more likely to be affected by flight cancellations, though British Airways has also reported that there will be some disruption to their schedule. If you are flying to or from Spain tomorrow, contact your airline before you leave for the airport to find out if your flight will be affected.

A Ryanair spokesman commented on the strike action and explained that steps should be taken to prevent the impact on travellers' journeys: ‘Air traffic control is an essential service and these protected civil service workers should not be allowed to strike or hold passengers to ransom in this way. National providers should be deregulated and allowed to compete with each other in a system that will allow one country to manage the airspace of neighbouring countries to prevent flights being cancelled or delayed during industrial action.'

The latest strikes in Spain have followed a summer of disruption from strike action across Europe. British Airways held 22 days of strikes earlier in the summer, and previous strikes in Spain and France have caused misery for some people taking holidays in Europe.

Most airline strikes have been held as a result of the poor pay and working conditions of airline workers.
