Surfers "bummed out" by BA board ban

British Airways' (BA) ban on surfboards carried as cargo on its flights has been slammed by the UK surfing community.

The ban is due to come in November 6th and includes the route from Gatwick to surfing hotspot Newquay.

In response the British Surfing Association has launched a campaign to get the ban overturned - and has attacked the move as unfair.

A spokesman for the BSA said: "We feel completely let down and angered by the news that our national airline is banning surfboards rather than following some other airlines and charging a supplementary fee.

"Although every surfboard, piece of sporting equipment and musical instrument is different in shape and size, we'd find it extremely hard to believe that the average Mini Mal [a type of surfboard] would be more difficult to handle when compared to a double bass and a full bag of golf clubs."

Since news of BA's move broke, hundreds of the BSA's members have contacted the carrier to register their displeasure and a Facebook page has been set up to attract further support.
