23/09/2009

With oil prices on the rise again, anyone thinking of a taking a fly-drive holiday would be wise to go now, while they can still afford to fill up the tank. Here's some awesome road trips to whet the appetite.

For an all-time classic road trip take the Pacific Coast Highway, otherwise known as Route 1, from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Stretching 450 miles, it passes through mission towns, alongside some of the coolest surf beaches on the U.S. west coast and twists past sheer cliffs. To top it all, you'll enter San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge.

For sheer distance, nothing beats Australia's Great Ocean Road, a 250-mile stretch of tarmac along one of the most scenic coasts in the world. It cuts through traditional townships, rainforests and coastal cities.

The Garden Route, half an hour's drive from Cape Town in South Africa, consists of almost 200 miles of forests, pine plantations and bush land, hemmed in by mountains on one side and the sea on the other.

Start at Mossel Bay in the west and drive east to Plettenberg Bay to get the full extent of the beauty of the region. Take the back roads for a leisurely trip, but if you're short of time you can take the fast route along the N2 highway.
