Take part in the coolest marathon on earth - the Polar Circle Marathon!

19/08/2010

Every year runners from all over the world take part in a half or full marathon at the polar circle. This year's Polar Circle Marathon is taking place on 23 October 2010. The course runs through Kangerlussuaq and across the Greenland icecap. Imagine running your next marathon on ice!

Half marathon runners have four hours to complete, while full marathon runners will have seven. After the allotted time is up, any stragglers will be picked up by a medical car and taken to the finishing line.

The route sweeps through stunning snow covered scenery and what better way to experience the sparkling beauty of Greenland than on the Polar Circle Marathon. The Kangerlussuaq is also a great place to do a bit of sightseeing. There are many opportunities to go walking or cycling on way-marked paths, and you can go fishing in the fjord. Organisers of the Polar Circle Marathon offer tour packages that include flights, four nights' accommodation and meals.

Any marathon is no walk in the park, but the Polar Circle Marathon is particularly challenging due to the difficult terrain. Much of the route follows a gravel path, but this is often covered in snow, and parts of the icecap are naturally going to be slippery.

There's also the extreme weather to consider - temperatures in Greenland are around -5°C in October. But the weather at that time of year is generally clear with only a few snow flurries. Drinking plenty of water during a marathon is a given, but the air in Greenland is very dry so it's important to drink more than you normally would. There is a drink station every 5km, and some offer hot beverages.

Starting the marathon with extra layers of clothing is advisable. These can be dropped off at drink stations along the way as you warm up. Normal running shoes are fine, but adding running spikes can prevent slipping. Make sure you have appropriate clothing to withstand the cold weather and chilly winds.

There is no doubt that the Polar Circle Marathon is an adventure of a lifetime. If you wish to take part, there are still places in this year's race - but be quick because places are filling up fast!
