The Guardian names best ski resorts for novices

28/11/2007

The top three skiing resorts for beginners have been named by the Guardian.

Heading the list was Les Arc in France, which won praise for its free beginners' lift and for the range of nursery slopes available, which are located directly above each of the resort's main villages.

Les Arcs also scored for the presence of the much-lauded New Generation ski school in Vallandry, which it is claimed is staffed by "friendly instructors" who "will instil confidence in the most timid of beginners".

Also singled out for lavish praise was the Bankso resort in Bulgaria, where a similarly extensive selection of nursery slopes is on offer, according to the newspaper's travel writer Alf Anderson.

Meanwhile, the third-placed resort was Cortina in Italy, where there are "superbly groomed beginner slopes in the Socrapes area" and "instructors who are especially good with kids".

News of the poll comes as The Co-operative Travel and Travelcare this week claimed that prices have dropped for European skiing and snowboarding breaks - with some packages on offer for up to £100 less than they were last season.
