Thick snowfall gets ski season gets off to a strong start
04/12/2012
Heavy snow fall across the Alps and the Pyrenees last week means that the 2012/13 ski season is getting off fantastic start.
Many of the major ski resorts in France, Austria and Switzerland opened their ski slopes last weekend with a good base of snow already on the pistes.
Tigne and Val d'isere which together make up the Espace Killy ski region in the French Alps are reporting a snow base of over 60 cms.
If the first reports of snow make you want to grab your skies or board and head the slopes, don't forget to buy ski insurance before you leave.
Ski insurance is vital if you are going on a ski or snowboard holiday because it provides cover for emergency medical treatment if you are injured on the slopes, including recovery from the piste.
If you don't have any insurance, or only buy standard travel insurance you could find yourself facing large bills if you have an accident whilst skiing, particularly if you need to be airlifted from the piste.
Research published by ABTA and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office suggests that as many as a third of skiers don't have the right travel insurance with cover for winter sports when they head for the slopes. Make sure you're not one of them.
Remember, buying ski insurance or travel insurance with winter sports cover, doesn't just mean that you get some extra cover for your ski equipment and lift pass, it means that the Medical & Repatriation Expenses section of the policy is extended to provide cover if you have an accident on the slopes.
