Thomas Cook Group takes a step up

08/04/2008

The Thomas Cook Group has acquired luxury tour operator Elegant Resorts this week, in a bid to further expand its presence in the holiday market.

Elegant Resorts offers its customers champagne on arrival, helicopter transfers and the chance to select their favourite pillows, in order to make sure their holidays are as luxurious as possible.

The chief executive of Thomas Cook, Manny Fontenla-Novoa, explained how the acquisition will help the tour operator to "enhance its lucrative position" in the travel market.

"Elegant Resorts has a very strong brand name, associated with luxury, style and bespoke holidays and fully supports our strategic aim to become a leading independent travel provider," he said.

Thomas Cook has confirmed that Elegant Resorts will continue to do business under its current name, although the sum it paid for the luxury tour operator remains undisclosed.

Last year just under 19 million holidaymakers travelled with the Thomas Cook Group, to destinations across Europe and North America.

The tour operator has over 3,000 shops, including those which are franchised a fleet of 97 aircraft and it owns or operates 46 hotels and holiday properties.
