Thomson 2 pound holidays no reflection on market

05/08/2008

British tour operator Thomson claims that its decision to offer holidaymakers self-catering accommodation from £2 per night is not a reflection of a market slowdown.

The deals are available for studio and one-bedroom apartments in Greece, Turkey, Spain and Menorca and the holidays start at £14 for those leaving in October.

A spokesperson for the firm said that the deals were not a bid to drum up custom, as the firm's most recent results, released in May 2008, indicated no decline in booking patterns.

He added: "While this is a genuine offer which some of our customers will benefit from, it is a one-off promotion to promote a few selected hotels and is in no way indicative of current trading for the group or overall market."

Thomson's trading statement, issued earlier this year, revealed that the group's mainstream summer sales for 2008 are up eight per cent.

In related news, Brits have been advised by the Daily Telegraph to take out some decent travel insurance this summer.

The paper said that Brits opting to holiday on home soil should not overlook taking out this type of cover in order to cut costs.
