Tourists in Cambodia encouraged to visit Sambor Prei Kuk near Angkor Wat

Sambor Prei Kuk in the Kampong Thom province of Cambodia is an ancient architectural wonder, much like Angkor Wat. The ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk lie in lush jungle and they look as though they have leapt out of a scene from an Indiana Jones film.

A handicraft shop, information centre, restaurant and home-stay accommodation has been set up in the area to attract tourists. Visitors are being encouraged to stay overnight in the region to make the most of Sambor Prei Kuk and to experience other sites in the area such as Santuk mountain and Santuk Silk Farm.

Bicycle tours of Sambor Prei Kuk accompanied by knowledgeable tour guides are also up and running to attract adventurous types.

Sambor Prei Kuk dates back to the 7th century and the ruins are perfect examples of pre-Angkorean architecture built in honour of the Hindu god Shiva. Throughout the ruins there are many fine examples of Khmer art on display.

The German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) has funded some of the tourist facilities at Sambor Prei Kuk, with a view to bringing more money to local people that live in the area. GTZ has helped to train guides and educate local people on the historical importance of Sambor Prei Kuk.
