Travel warning for Washington and Oregon

Travellers planning trips to Washington and Oregon have been warned not to travel following a spate of flooding.

The warning comes after extreme weather hit the area, including wind gusts of more than 93 miles per hour and snowstorms, which have made many mountain roads impassable.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall caused a series of landslides with hundreds of people forced to leave their homes, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Travellers wishing to garner further information and updates should contact local emergency services, the Foreign Office said.

News of the warnings comes as more and more travellers to the US are choosing Washington as a holiday destination.

As well as the area's rich political history, the state also boasts the highly acclaimed Kennedy Centre, a thriving jazz scene in the nightclubs that line U Street and the International Spy Museum.
