Travellers can reduce their carbon footprint

06/02/2008

Holidaymakers wanting to reduce their carbon footprint while travelling can do small things to make a big difference, says an expert.

Taking measures like removing the packaging from toiletries and other goods before travelling can help, as often destinations do not have recycling facilities.

Also advised by the travel Foundation is turning the air conditioning or heating off before leaving the hotel room to help save energy.

David Weston, a spokesperson for the travel Foundation, said: "Tips like this are small within themselves, but if everybody does them it adds up enormously with helping to reduce wastage and the carbon footprint of tourism in general."

Since 2001 money spent with ethically responsible tour operators has risen by 25 per cent to £121 million.

A recent travel Supermarket report found that many people were reluctant to reduce their holidaying in order to protect the environment, with almost half saying they did not feel guilty about flying.
