Travelsupermarket.com reveals world's most costly country for car hire

30/09/2010

When Brits travel abroad, many hire a car to get out and about. Some car hire companies offer excellent value for money on economy cars, while others advertise extortionate prices.

Travelsupermarket.com has conducted a worldwide survey of the least and most expensive car hire firms across the globe. Georgia had the most expensive prices on car hire. Their cheapest rental rate was a whopping £663.80 to hire a car from Georgia's Tbilisi International Airport for one week. Zambia was also expensive at £532.40 as was the Seychelles at £509.

Ireland offered the lowest prices. To hire an economy car for one week costs just £76.90, over eight times cheaper than the prices in Georgia. Popular holiday destinations Spain, Portugal and Malta also had very reasonable prices. A week's car hire in any of these three destinations costs under £100 for one week.

If you are planning to hire a car abroad, make sure you book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Airport car hire companies might have inflated prices, so you could find cheaper deals if you pick the rental car up in town.

Familiarise yourself with the rules of the road before you travel - remember to find out which side of the road you will be driving on!

When you pick up your rental car, make sure the car hire firm makes a note of any current damage to the car and the amount of petrol that's in the tank. You will need to return the hire car with the same amount of petrol (usually a full tank) otherwise you might be charged for petrol, which would be more than you'd have to pay at a petrol station.

Be extra vigilant when you hit the road in a foreign country. If you drive as soon as you arrive, remember that you may be tired and more susceptible to mistakes. Consider sharing the driving with a partner so that you can both take regular breaks. Most car hire firms don't charge extra for one additional driver.
