TUI Travel recognised as one of the top companies for carbon disclosure

15/10/2010

Many holidaymakers feel that green travel options are important when travelling abroad. People consider their carbon footprints at home, so it makes sense to also keep them in check when they go on holiday.

TUI Travel, the organisation that heads up popular travel brands such as Thomson and First Choice, has been recognised as one of the top companies for carbon disclosure.

TUI Travel has taken steps to promote green travel practices. This year, their carbon disclosure score rose by 27% on last year's score. TUI Travel is currently ranked in sixth place on the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, produced by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Peter Long, Chief Executive of TUI Travel, commented on their achievement: ‘We are delighted once again to be recognised for our good corporate governance in respect of carbon management and the progress we have made this year. We have a firm commitment to manage our environmental footprint from the Board level down. We have been putting measures in place to reduce our current and future carbon emissions. Our goal is to reduce our direct carbon emissions by 6% by 2013/14.'

TUI Travel also received the World's Responsible Tourism Award in 2009 at the World Travel Awards, the biggest travel award ceremony of its kind anywhere in the world. Other awards they have received include the Most Environmentally & Socially Responsible Airline for Thomson Airways and TUI UK & Ireland received the Co-operative Travel Star Award for sustainable tourism.

TUI Travel specialises in affordable holiday options. The company is considered to be the world's leading leisure travel provider. They have over 200 brands, they operate in over 180 countries and they employ 50,000 staff in the UK.

The company's carbon management initiative works towards reducing TUI Travel's impact on climate change by replacing old aircraft with newer, more fuel efficient planes and by ensuring that there is a sustainable impact on their destinations.
