Uninsured traveller returns home from Spain
10/10/2007
An uninsured holidaymaker's plight has highlighted the importance of taking out travel insurance.
Decorator Charlie Wake, 23, was taking a holiday in Spain when he broke his neck in a freak surfing accident, the Mirror reports.
Mr Wake's decision not to take out travel insurance and the fact that he was unable to afford the air fare home meant that he was forced to spend the last five weeks in a Spanish hospital away from his family
He has only now been able to return to the UK thanks to his friends who clubbed together to secure him passage on an air ambulance.
Mr Wake said: "No one should ever go away without the right cover. I would hate anyone else to go through this hell."
"It was just a misunderstanding that left me without insurance. I heard someone in the group talking about cover and thought it had been sorted. I hope by telling my story it will stop others from making the same mistake."
