Where to ski this winter, the Alps or the Rockies
11/10/2009
Ski resorts in North America have an excellent reputation, but with so many excellent resorts in the Alps, is it really worth the time and expense to get to the States? We asked some skiing experts for their opinions.
Andy Harmer, head of product for Neilson Ski (www.neilson.co.uk) said the trek is probably not worthwhile for complete beginners, who can find good tuition, reliable snow and plenty of apr?s-ski in the Alps.
He pointed out that there's lots more going on in the Alpine resorts away from the slopes than you'll find in North America. There are some lovely chocolate-box resorts in Austria Switzerland and France with other attractions if beginners decide that skiing is not for them he said.
Tuition in Europe is much better than it used to be, though some resorts are better than others. Austrian instructors place a lot of emphasis on technique, while in Italy the instruction is more laid-back.
That said, ski schools in North America come highly recommended, partly because there is no language barrier.
Not only that, but resorts in the Rockies have lots of gentle slopes that are just right for beginners. The slopes tend to be quite empty and you don't get skiers racing down at 100 miles per hour, said Ski Dream (www.wandotravel.com/ski) marketing executive Michael Brabin.
The cost of the flight is more than hopping over to the Alps, but the cost of living is lower, especially since sterling's fall against the euro, so you'll spend less when you get there.
The quality of the accommodation in probably higher than in Europe, and the level of service generally better.
Though Europe has enjoyed excellent snow for the past two winters, conditions in North America are typically more reliable.
