Flight delay? What does travel insurance cover?
Although the average delay in minutes looks relatively low in this table it's important to remember that these are average figures, made up of large numbers of flights which are on time, or just a few minutes late and the occasional flight which is delayed for a long period of time.
Travel insurance can provide cover, under the travel delay section of the policy, if your flight is subject to a long delay due to strikes, mechanical breakdown or adverse weather. Travel delay cover takes the form of a fixed benefit which is designed to help you pay for additional expenses such as food and drink whilst you wait at the airport.
Plus, if you are delayed by more than 24 hours, you can choose to abandon your holiday and make a claim to recoup the cost, up to the level stated in your policy schedule.
In order to make a successful claim on your travel insurance for travel delay you must have checked in at the airport and obtained a letter from the airline confirming the length and reason for the delay.
To make a claim under the travel delay section of your travel insurance policy you must have checked in for your flight at the airport and you must obtain a letter from the airline or travel company confirming the length and reason for the delay.
