Worldwide travel insurance customers look for value for money destinations

21/07/2009

Customers buying worldwide travel insurance are heading to countries that offer the best value for money, including South Africa Kenya, Thailand, Egypt and Bali.

A recent report by the Post Office revealed that holidaymakers are choosing long-haul packages with prices that compared favourably with European trips.

Eight out of 10 of its fastest growing currencies in June were for long-haul destinations, with South Africa and Kenya coming out on top. Sales of the Chinese yuan are also growing, showing that China is continuing to sustain the interest generated by last year's Olympic Games in Beijing.

Closer to home, Turkey is becoming increasingly popular. Sales of the Turkish lira have overtaken the Australian dollar to make it the third most popular currency after the euro and the US dollar.

Sterling has recovered almost 9% of its value against the euro since the start of 2009, and some of the most popular resorts in Spain Portugal and Greece have cut their prices to entice British holidaymakers.

According to the Post Office, prices in the Algarve are down 3.5% compared to last year, despite the weaker pound.
