Your holiday in Greece could be affected by public transport strikes
16/06/2010
Public sector workers are continuing to demonstrate their distaste of the austerity measures in Greece by holding public transport strikes. If you are on holiday in Greece, your trip could be affected by the strikes.
Today, 16 June, the Athens Metro will be on strike for a 24 hour period. The Metro provides an underground rail link from Athens International Airport to the city centre. If your holiday in Greece has just begun or it's just ending, you may need to make alternative arrangements to get to the airport.
Tonight at 19:00, a rally will be taking place in Klafthmonos Square in central Athens, in protest against the austerity measures.
Tomorrow, all public transport in Athens and Greek railways throughout Greece will be affected by strikes between 11:00 and 16:00. This could have even more of an impact on your holiday in Greece. If you need to get to or from Athens International Airport, try to do so outside of the striking hours.
The Foreign Office has advised that regular strikes will continue throughout June. If you are on holiday in Greece, or you are planning one, check the Foreign Office website regularly to make sure that the strikes won't affect your holiday. The Foreign Office updates their travel information by country on a regular basis. Strikes in Greece could be announced at the last minute and may even affect air travel. As yet no further strikes have been announced.
For further information about the public transport strikes, call 1110 from Greece or 00 30 210 5298829 from outside of Greece.
Tension between public sector workers and the government has been high since the austerity measures were announced in May.
